Disappointed in NARS’ Facebook Cover Photo and Advertisement

Yesterday while I was checking my newsfeed on Facebook I came across a disturbing photo.  It was a feed that NARS Cosmetics had updated their cover photo and the photo was an ad for their new skincare line.  What stood out to me was not the skincare product itself, it was the model next to it.  I was really shocked to see such a skinny girl who obviously did not look healthy in this picture.  Okay to be completely blunt, she looks sickly in my eyes.  I had to click into the comments to see if anyone else thought the same thing.  Sure enough, 99% of the comments were about how the model looked way too skinny and fans were definitely disappointed by NARS’ decision on this ad.

While you can defend NARS by saying that some girls are just naturally that skinny I am very disappointed by this NARS ad.   NARS should realize or already know that they are an industry leader and their customers look to them for inspiration and often times the definition of beauty every season.  To be in that position of great influence, NARS needs to be extremely careful with their message.  In a society with so many eating disorders and body image issues, NARS should be sensitive to the fact that hundreds and thousands of girls look toward the models in magazines and advertisements as the ideal image of beauty.  If they put a girl on their ad who is obviously much much thinner than the majority and would be considered underweight if not unhealthy in a doctor’s office, they need to realize what message they are putting across.

The reason I’m so heated is because I think of the young girls out there that believe that being skinny is everything.  How many girls did you know growing up that would starve themselves or go to the bathroom to throw up after every meal?  And the ideal body image just keeps getting smaller and smaller.  We should be helping the younger generation find beauty within themselves and to accept their own bodies and promote healthy lifestyles.  We shouldn’t be putting impossibly skinny girls in their faces and imply that that is the definition of beauty.

Here’s the photo that I saw and is still currently NARS Cosmetics’ cover photo on Facebook.  What are your thoughts on this advertisement?  In your eyes, is NARS successful in promoting their skincare line?

  • wow…that's pretty bad. Nothing against the model, but yea…I don't think that's a healthy way to portray "beauty".
